I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. I hit Price Chopper again while I was downtown. (Pip needed bananas for the garage and I wanted a chuck roast that didn’t look like it was already going bad, like the single chuck roast in the meat cooler yesterday when I was there.)

I took mom’s vehicle up to the garage before her appointment because I’ve been hearing a strange noise. When I mentioned it to Pip, he was worried it might be the wheel bearing and wanted to test drive it. The bad news is, it is the wheel bearing. The good news is, it’s in its ‘infancy’ (Pip’s actual word, lol), so we can still drive her car. (She finds it difficult to get in and out of mine and sister S’s, for different reasons; mine is too low, hers is too high (she drives a pick-up).) He’s checking into wheel bearings and we’ll schedule something in the next couple of weeks. For someone who has been mostly house-bound since June, she’s spending an awful lot on this vehicle.

I drove mom to her treatment, hand-washed dishes, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, browned ground beef to make lasagna tomorrow, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I did find a nice chuck roast and put it in the crock pot when I got home from downtown (before I went to pick up mom’s vehicle). It was quite yummy.

I read fanfic and drank egg nog. Zoo North Carolina was my background tv in the evening.

Temps started out at 19.4(F) (BRR!!) and reached 39.7. There was some blue sky peeking out behind the clouds and even a little bit of sun!

Wednesday Reading Meme

Nov. 19th, 2025 09:50 am

Holy moly, I finally finished a book! A combination of reading/writing fic, watching tv shows/movies, and my fun bout of sciatica meant I didn’t pick up a book for weeks! October 1st was the last time I posted a reading meme! That’s six weeks! Yikes. I had even requested three books from the library, two of which I had to return because I ran out of renewals.

What I Just Finished Reading: Since my last Wednesday Reading Meme post I have read/finished reading: Winging It with You by Chip Pons.

What I am Currently Reading: Guardian of the Horizon (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) by Elizabeth Peters.

What I Plan to Read Next: Despite my track record, I have requested three more books from the library. o_O One has been shipped, so I will hopefully have that one soon.

Book 105 of 2025: Winging It with You (Chip Pons)

I enjoyed this book, though you wouldn't know it by how long it took me to read it. spoilers )

I was feeling so good about this book by the end that I looked up the author to see what else he'd written. I'm giving this book four hearts and may yet read another of his books.

♥♥♥♥

(If anyone is interested in reading this book, please let me know, I’m happy to send it to you. USA only, sorry.)

I hit Price Chopper and the Pharmacy while I was downtown and Stewart’s on the way home from mom’s. I heard ‘(My Angel is a) Centerfold’ while I was at BK. It was certainly a blast from the past and I immediately wondered just exactly what kind of playlist they’ve chosen?!! o_O It’s certainly a choice.

I drove mom to her treatment, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher and ran another load, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I made the meatloaf for supper before I picked mom up and stuck it in the fridge. I serve it with mashed potatoes and green beans. Always. Don’t ask me to change this! Also, it was really good.

I baked some cookies from frozen cookie dough that I bought for a school fundraiser. I also filled some wishes at Holiday Wishes, which made me feel good. I read fanfic and started an actual book.

Temps started out at 34.2(F) and reached 37.0.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing okay today. She’s admitted that she’s getting more tired and weak, which the person doing her treatment said was to be expected. She didn’t have any issues eating.

I got her mail, wrote out checks (her hands still shake pretty badly) and put them back in the mailbox; filled pill organizers, and did dishes for her.

I hit Walmart while I was downtown and the bank drive-thru on the way home.

I forgot to mention that I went through the McD’s drive-thru on Saturday (Pip wanted hash browns). I asked if the heat was working and was told that it was. So I went there this morning. Dear readers, the heat was not working. I chatted with some people who were there (about the heat not working) and then went to BK. Such a disappointment. Oh well, if I’m honest, the sandwiches are better at BK, but I like the atmosphere at McD’s better for writing.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I remembered to pick up a GC for mom (her friend’s b-day) and even stopped at the post office to put the card in the mail for her. I made kielbasa and baby carrots for supper. (I got ground beef out of the freezer so I could make meatloaf tomorrow.)

I watched Tracker and read some fanfic. There was more Dr. Pol for background tv.

Temps started out at 26.2(F) and reached 38, according to Pip. I never saw it get that high. There was more wind, which sucks. I have to dress with even more layers when there’s wind because it goes right through.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good when I talked to her in the evening. She was watching Mama’s Family. *g* She said her treatment went well and she didn’t have any issues eating. I’ll be able to see for myself tomorrow (today now).

I DVR’d and watched some more Hallmark Christmas movies since the last post; some were okay, but some were pretty good.

1. Believe in Christmas: This movie was cute, but I don’t have any interest in watching it again. I only DVR’d it because John Reardon and Megan Ory where in it. I liked the friendship between Beatrice and Emelia. I also thought it was neat that Kevin Hanchard (who plays Superintendent Joe Donovan on Hudson & Rex) was also in the movie. The ‘miscommunication’ bit is my least favorite of every Hallmark movie, especially when the miscommunication is brought on by something really stupid, but at least this one was resolved quickly. I did shake my head when Beatrice found the angel that had been missing for five years under a piece of furniture, as if the owners of a B&B haven’t vacuumed under that piece of furniture in five years. o_O

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, clipped Pip’s hair, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, changed kitty litter, and showered.

I finally finished a book! It’s been so long since I’ve managed this feat. It feels like quite an accomplishment. I watched a Hallmark Christmas movie. I had the Bills game on background in the afternoon and Zoo Tampa in the evening. (The Bills game was nerve-wracking as the teams alternately scored, but exciting when it became clear that the Bills were going to pull out the win, lol!)

Temps started out at 48.7(F) and dropped to 38.5 over the next few hours. During the middle of the day temps hovered around 40 while the weather itself was volatile and weird: rain, hail, snow, sun, hail again, more snow, more sun, more snow and through it all windy like crazy! Each time the snow moved in again, Pip would say, here comes another wall of snow! Temps started dropping again mid-afternoon.

Mom Update:

I don't have much. Mom sounded good today. Sister S stopped in to see her. She didn’t have any issues with eating (that she told me about). She watched some Hallmark.

I hit Price Chopper and the bakery while I was downtown. I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, made egg salad, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter.

For funsies, I watched Matlock, Mistletoe Mysteries, and some HGTV programs. Dr. Pol was once again my background tv later in the evening.

Temps started out at 32.5 when we got up, but had reached 24.8(F) before I left the house. (Temps dropped over 7 degrees in an hour and a half!) Just watching the temp drop made me cold. It eventually reached 44.8 that I saw before going down to visit mom, but Pip said it hit 50. Rain came in late afternoon, it got really heavy (Pip said there was an inch in the rain gauge, but given how hard it was coming down I thought there’d be more) and there was thunder and lightning, which we didn’t expect.

There was one blast of thunder that must’ve been right above us because it was so loud it sent Midnight, who’d been sleeping in his bed under a blanket, shooting out of there like a bullet. He stood on the bed (his bed is on our bed during the day) looking all confused and wary, like, wtf was that?!! It was followed by the brightest bolt of lightning, which lit up the bedroom through the drawn shades. Thankfully it moved away after that.

Yet another day I did not go downtown. (It’s actually kind of nice to stay home some mornings, especially when I’d like to get stuff done on ‘mom’ days.) I visited my aunt and paid her ‘rent’, drove mom to her appointment, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, boiled eggs to make egg salad, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I boiled the macaroni to complete the goulash and that’s what we had for supper tonight.

I watched 9-1-1 and some HGTV programs. Dr. Pol was my background tv in the evening. I also wrote ~500 words on my Top Gun fic. I’m slowing down; the closer I get to the end, the harder it is to get motivated.

Temps started out at 32.4(F) and reached 43.2.

Another day I chose not to go downtown. I drove mom to her treatment, did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I shake ‘n baked pork chops for supper.

I watched another Hallmark Christmas movie and some HGTV programs. Zoo Tampa was my background tv in the evening. I dropped by the library to return books and asked about them ordering a book. (The latest J.D. Robb; it’s odd that they haven’t already ordered it because they usually order that series.) And I made sure I was on the hold list for the new Louise Penny.

In the annoying story of sciatica redux, I am starting to feel some 'pain' (mild, more like a twinge, feels sort of like a muscle pull) in the middle of my buttock again. My chiropractor had said to keep track of anything like that happening and to keep icing, just in case it was not as fully gone as I thought. And here we are. I really hope it's just the last vestiges and not starting up again. Or planning to hang on forever. o_O *fingers crossed*

Temps started out at 38.1(F) and reached 40.8. Today was a combination of rain, snow, sun, wind, more rain . . . I did not appreciate the variety, tbh.

This was another off-duty day for me, as sister S was once again taking mom to her appointment. I hit the Pharmacy while I was downtown and dropped off a car insurance payment to State Farm. (Convenient, as they’re located in the same ‘mall’.) I stopped at the bank drive-thru on the way home and Stewart’s (for gas and milk) on the way to pick up the dogs. At home I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. We had hot dogs for supper. I have a feeling there won't be very much grilling going on from here on out (although the temps are supposed to hit the 40s next week, so maybe . . .)

I had breakfast at Burger King this morning. I was talking to myself as if explaining the process as I was opening the ketchup packets because I often get ketchup on my fingers. So I’m on the last one and I’m like, push the ketchup away from the arrow thingy so when you rip it open you don’t get ketchup all over your fingers. Yes, success! And then I immediately dropped the ketchup packet into the pile of ketchup already on the tray. I clean up the mess that results from me having to pick up the ketchup-covered packet and then shake my OJ, only to get it all over because I hadn’t put the cap back on tightly. I was like, what even is this morning?!!

I typed in all of the transcript notes I’d taken for Top Gun: Maverick, and watched a Hallmark Christmas movie and some HGTV programs.

Temps started out at 32.4(F) and reached 41.2. Both temps again higher than forecasted by a few degrees; it’s not much, but I’ll take it. At one point we even had a little sun.

I hit Walmart and Agway while I was downtown. At home I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher and ran another load, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered.

I pulled spaghetti sauce out of the freezer for supper and also browned ground beef to make the base of ~something for the coming cold days (I'm thinking our family version of goulash, which is nothing like actual goulash, which I found out when I ordered it out once and was like, wtf is this?!! o_O).

I finished the Hallmark Christmas movie I started last night and watched another. I think the light snow was making me feel seasonal-ish.

Temps started out at 26.6(F) (forecasted to be 23) and reached 34.5 (forecasted to be 30). Both the low and high temps were slightly higher than forecasted. Today is supposed to be the coldest day of the week, and I hope that holds. There was a coating of snow on the ground when I left the house this morning, but the main roads were pretty good. It snowed all day, but so light you could barely see it, and it melted as soon as it hit the ground, thankfully. It was very windy for most of the afternoon and I had to dress very warmly (aka, so many layers) on our walks.

Tumblr-speak has made it into my everyday language. When I let Ti out this afternoon I asked him if he was sure he wanted to go outside because it was awfully ‘wimdy’ out.

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. I hit Price Chopper while I was downtown and then Stewart’s later on. I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a walk with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I fried up liver for Pip's supper.

I had a bit of a brain snafu and forgot that Sister S was taking mom to her appointment today. I had written it down in my calendar, but did not keep the info in my brain. So I had an unexpected free day.

I took a nap which was nice. I’ve also been drinking hot cocoa on cool days, which is also nice. I watched Tracker and a partial Hallmark Christmas movie (I’m going to finish it, just didn’t have time tonight).

Temps started out at 35.4(F) and reached 37. Once it hit 37, about mid-morning, the temps started going down. It was quite a cool day. And we did end up getting a teensy bit of snow late afternoon, just enough to remind us that it is winter, and that more is on the way.

I’m sorry for subjecting you to this topic for a second week, but I’ve really been going down rabbit holes and just ~thinking about them a lot, and so I need to share. Today is going to basically cover three topics. The first two could go under the heading “How to create nostalgia”.

1. Parallels between Top Gun: Maverick and Top Gun (1986)

A. Maverick’s leather jacket
B. Maverick’s motorcycle
C. Maverick racing the plane
D. Maverick’s love interest drives a Porsche
E. The game on the beach (volleyball vs dogfight football)
F. Maverick defies orders
G. The MUSIC
H. The tower fly-by

I did three loads of laundry, vacuumed the bedroom rug (so much dog hair!), hand-washed dishes, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, placed an online order for Pip, and changed kitty litter. I grilled chicken legs for Pip’s supper (in the rain, bleh).

I typed in ~600 words of fic that I wrote yesterday and scrolled through the transcript (and took more notes). I also watched a Hallmark Christmas movie and an HGTV program. I also took a brief nap. (I did not visit mom today, as I had originally planned. I felt very energetic in the morning, but lost steam in the afternoon and just wanted to nap. The nap didn’t last as long as I’d hoped, but it helped.)

Temps started out at 37.8(F) and reached 43.3. We had rain in the afternoon, which I did not appreciate.

Mom Update:

I talked to mom on the phone today. She sounded good. My brother visited her this morning. Other than that she watched some Hallmark Christmas movies and got her meals.

I hit Price Chopper, the Pharmacy, and the Bakery while I was downtown.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. We had battered fish and fries for supper; because Pip has GF batter and he likes curly fries, our meals go on two separate trays in the oven.

I read-through what I’ve typed in so far (and typed in those edits) and added ~400 words. It wasn’t as much as I wanted to write, but I decided to give myself a break after writing and typing all those words. I watched Matlock and Mistletoe Murders.

Temps started out at 50.2(F) (we were not expecting it to be so warm in the morning!) and reached ~50.2. It went down then back up to the morning low. I never saw it go higher. There was some sun, but still a breeze that cooled things down a bit.
